Windows 10 - How to change the default application for file types By J W Stuart May 3rd, 2016
You may find that Windows 10 does not always open a file with your preferred application. Here is how you can change which application open a file.
I will be using an Adobe .PDF document file for this example. As you may or may not have discovered after upgrading to Windows 10, when you click on a .pdf file expecting Adobe Reader to open and display the contents; instead you find that Microsoft’s Edge browser has opened the file.
Or you may be prompted (if no file association /app has been assigned) to choose what app you want to open .pdf documents and you selected the Edge Browser.
After trying the Edge browser you decide you want to use Adobe Reader when you open a .pdf file.
Right click on the .pdf file you want to view and select the ‘Open with’ option and in the list of apps that can open a .pdf file choose Adobe Reader.
After the .pdf file opens, in a few seconds you should be prompted to “Make Adobe Reader my default PDF application”, click the ‘OK’ and click ‘Yes’ when prompted’ to make Adobe the default application.
Now your .pdf documents will always open with Adobe Reader.
