3) Create a baseline Image Backup: This backup is in effect the current state of your hard drive before any changes are made. If for any reason you need to recover Windows to your hard drive this is the backup you will use.
a) Connect your external USB drive, create a folder and name it: Acronis_2013_Baseline
b) Start Acronis True Image 2013, from the main screen click on the ‘Backup and Recovery’ tab if it is not already selected. Click on the ‘Disk and partition backup’ option.
c) Select the ‘Disk and partition backup’ option. Since my hard drive has 3 partitions, all 3 must be checked in order to include them in the image backup. In the ‘Destination’ box click on the dropdown arrow and select ‘Browse’. Select the USB drive and double click on the folder you created in step 3a.
d) Change the ‘Backup’ scheme from ‘Incremental’ to ‘Custom’ / ‘Full’, click the ‘OK’ button.
e) Click on the ‘Disk backup options’ in the lower left and in the ‘Advanced’ tab select ‘Validation’ and check the ‘Validate backup when it is created’ box.
In the ‘Performance’ tab move the sliders to ‘High’ compression and ‘Operation priority to ‘Normal’. Check the ‘Save the settings as default’ box and click the ‘OK’ button.
f) Your configuration should look like this, click ‘Back up now’ button in the lower right corner to start the backup.
g) The progress bar and time left values are usually inaccurate at the start of the backup and will not give a reasonable value until the backup is about 1/3 complete.
h) After the backup has completed Acronis should display the backup results.
