Never really did warm the hearts of traditional Desktop / Laptop users. Market share about 12.5% as of July of 2014 and as breaking news has it Windows 9 may be available as early as October of 2014. What killed Windows 8 is the lack of a “real” start menu and a poorly implemented “Desktop mode”, not to mention the almost total lack of touch based computers when Windows 8 was first released in October of 2012. Windows 8.1 Update 2 may become available in a month or two, maybe this will be the real return of the start menu.
Currently the X97 chipset motherboards (the latest chipset available at this time) have Windows 8 drivers available. The X99 chipset is due sometime in the 2nd half of 2014 along with a whole new set of processors.
